Her strong family background created the groundwork for her to identify at a young age that she was a singer/musician, and she was supported to develop her passion for it. Maria de Barros’ music transcends taste, preference and even language. It travels through countries dense with culture, picking up pieces of each along the way, combining distinct inflections of Africa, Brazil, the Carribean, France and Spain. However, Maria is passionate about presenting the traditions and cultures of Cape Verde through her music. She describes Cape Verde, the homeland of her parents, as a tiny little island paradise off the west coast of Africa. This island may be very poor, but it produced a great love in Maria de Barros.
