Fredrik Ejemo, actor, musician, and writer was born and raised in Stockholm, Sweden.  At age 17, Fredrik was discovered by a casting director and soon began a career in the performing arts. He starred in the television show ‘Three Crowns’, the #1 TV series in the country and then went on to star in ‘Friends and Enemies’, another  successful television series. Later he joined the prestigious Royal Dramatic Theater in Sweden and acted in several national theater productions. 

When he was 21 years old, Fredrik traveled to Thailand and had a spiritual awakening that deeply affected the course of his life. He dove into metaphysical studies, exploring ancient wisdom and mysticism in order to understand this new level of conscious awareness. Driven by a longing desire to heal his own dysfunctional family patterns, an absent father and wounded mother, led Fredrik on a quest to find the sacred feminine to restore divine union within himself. This resulted in a 3 year sabbatical which took him on a journey throughout India, Southeast Asia, and the United States.

He crossed path with many spiritual teachers from different traditions. Shri Shri Ravi Shankar, Byron Katie, Joan Halifax, Bernie Prior, and Brad Blanton, to name a few. For many, Dr. Bernard Siegel—or Bernie, as he prefers to be called—needs no introduction. He has touched many lives all over the Planet. In 1978, he reached a national and then international audience when he began talking about patient empowerment and the choice to live fully and die in peace. As a physician who has cared for and counseled innumerable people whose mortality has been threatened by illness, Bernie embraces a philosophy of living and dying that stands at the forefront of the medical ethics and spiritual issues our Society grapples with today. In May 2011, Bernie was honored by the Watkins Review of London, England, as one of the Top 20 Spiritually Influential Living People on the Planet. He continues to break new ground in the field of healing, supporting changes in medical education to “humanize” medical practice.

Bernie was born in Brooklyn, NY, and attended Colgate University and Cornell University Medical College. He graduated with honors and holds membership in two scholastic honor societies, Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Omega Alpha. He trained to become a surgeon at Yale New Haven Hospital, West Haven Veteran’s Hospital and the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. In 1989, Bernie retired from Yale as an Assistant Clinical Professor of General and Pediatric Surgery to speak to patients, their families and caregivers.

In his latest book, his 12th, published in September 2011, entitled A BOOK OF MIRACLES—Inspiring True Stories of Healing, Gratitude, and Love, Bernie is described in the Foreword written by Deepak Chopra who tells us “Bernie Siegel began his writing career twenty-five years ago, and from the outset he didn’t shy away from miracles. The title of his first book—LOVE, MEDICINE & MIRACLES (1986)—flaunted his disagreement with mainstream medicine. An MD who advised more love as a path to healing would have been in enough trouble. Opening the possibility of miracles was grounds for dismissal. In 1978, nearly a decade before retirement, Bernie launched ECaP—Exceptional Cancer Patients, in which he and his wife and co-worker, Bobbie, remain active today. ECaP is a therapeutic approach Bernie calls Carefrontation that helps patients interpret their drawings, dreams and images to express their feelings about the healing process. The physical, spiritual, and psychological benefits that emerge strengthen the immune system, a direct response to the power of the Mind-Body Connection about which Bernie has written and spoken extensively. He is currently working on other books with the goal of empowering patients and teaching survival behavior to enhance immune system competency. Bernie believes that in the next decade, the roles of consciousness, spirituality, non-local healing, body memory, and heart energy will all be explored more intensively as scientific subjects.

All along the way, Bernie’s wife, Barbara H. Siegel—or Bobbie—has been a mainstay at workshops on helping patients interpret their drawings and especially, with a talent for very funny one-liners, at workshops on the healing power of humor. Bobbie, a graduate of Oswego State Teachers College with a BS in Early Childhood Education, credits her academic work as the preparation she needed to educate and train Bernie. On his part, Bernie does say that her guidance has helped him become the person he is today. Bobbie and Bernie raised five children together and now, as then, live in a home full of children’s things (for their eight grandchildren), pets, and especially love.

Fa7 is a musician and artist in France and travels extensively visiting Europe then Africa, making friends in passage with people of all social and geographical origins. His guitar and his song writing are his expression and vision for how to assist healing the world which encircles it.

Ti (pronounced tai) Harmon is originally from Philadelphia. She began singing at the age of five, when she was the first to eagerly volunteer for the solo in her kindergarten Christmas concert. She has since honed her skills performing in New York, Madrid, and Paris. After completing her theatre studies at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, she founded Rize Theatre and Dance Company. She then moved to Madrid where she decided to focus on music.

She now calls upon the total of her experiences to find her unique musical universe: a sweet Jazz mixed with Soul, Folk, and Blues.

The band consists of Ti Harmon (Voice/Songwriter), Germain Guyot (Paino/Songwriter), Thomas Hugenel (Bass/Songwriter), Stephane Berti (Guitar), and Martin Wangermée (Drums). The group has been working together for over a year and combines styles and creative ideas to arrive at their distinct sound. The group debuted its project at the Fronteny Jazz Festival in August 2009.

Coach Betty and Simon Bartholomew

Simon Bartholomew, guitarist to ‘The Brand New Heavies‘ is a modern day renaissance man of many talents and interests. One fan has described Bartholomew’s guitar playing as: “a timely late 90s reminder that the guitar can be a delicately versatile tool, percussive and fluid as required…” However, this is not the only talent that Bartholomew possesses; his dexterity goes far beyond the mere strings of a guitar. Since forming ‘The Heavies’ (as he affectionately likes to call then) with school mates Andrew and Jay, Bartholomew has been involved in numerous other bands including ‘Akimbo’ and ’1ibear’, both of whom are from the same acid jazz genre. Surprisingly, however, when asked what his own musical influences are Bartholomew discloses that he is secretly a bit of a rocker. Jan Kincaid and Yvette Summers

A pioneer of the London Acid Jazz scene, Jan Kincaid translated his love for the funk grooves of the seventies into a sophisticated sound championing classic soul in an era dominated by Hip-Hop. The Brand New Heavies was originally an instrumental unit inspired by the James Brown and Meters records its members heard while clubbing the Rare Groove scene in vogue at the time.

When Jan played live in the USA he hypnotised audiences that hadn’t seen a live drummer in a long time, but especially impressed were the rap community who saw a drummer playing grooves that rappers would usually sample from old 70′s records. Legendary R&B artist Ray Charles was so impressed with the BNHs that he invited the band to play his 50th anniversary in the music biz.

Curtis began telling stories in his early teen-aged years growing up in Chicago. He entertained his friends for hours with the stories that he would invent spontaneously with them always begging for more. He began writing professionally as an advertising copywriter for the Leo Burnett agency in Chicago, and then moved to Young & Rubicam in New York. His final job, before moving to California, was as Senior Vice-President, Creative Director, for Burrell Communications in Chicago…all this for a high school drop out!!

He then began a career of freelance writing, and wrote a newsletter for Honda Motor Company dealers in Los Angeles, and was a columnist for a Buddhist newspaper, "The World Tribune" for a number of years.

He went on to UCLA as a graduate student of European History, and has written and published a number of scholarly papers.

He is writing his first novel, "16 rue Rambuteau" a love letter to Paris, which includes a contemporary mystery involving misappropriated property during the 18th century, and the protagonist 21st century efforts to see that justice is done. It is planned for publishing in 2012.

AyiTe is a guitarist and a singer, based in Paris, born from a Togolese father and a French mother. He was raised with both the African and European culture, sharing time between the two countries growing up. He began to play the piano early as his mother was a piano teacher. He began the guitar at 16 and then moved to France.

He started playing in many local groups and worked hard to improve his skills on the guitar as well as his vocal abilities. He has worked with some of the greatest world music artists like Angelique Kidjo, Xalam, and Wasis Diop to mention a few. He performs at most major European, Australian and US World Music Festivals.

What you hear on the podcast is a song from his first record "Ofra", a song titled  "Cape Of Good Hope," telling about South Africa, the breathtaking place where the black continent meets both the Atlantic and Indian Oceans in an Organic and Orgasmic fusion.

Before moving to Eze, France last July, he had never gardened before growing up in New York City. Though he's been long retired from the music industry proper, most Bay Area engineers who came of age in the '70s credit David Rubinson with teaching them how records are made. Herbie Hancock, the Pointer Sisters, Santana, Janis, Moby Grape, Jefferson Airplane, Taj Mahal — his legacy will never end. Did we mention that he founded the Automatt and was the music producer for Apocalypse Now?

My special guest today from Barcelona, Spain is Antonia Moreno of Antonia's Organic Restaurant. Karen Parsegian

Karen Parsegian, found herself blind in 2002 when complications from an accident to one eye left her unexpectedly and totally blind in both. With more than 25 years of corporate and non profit experience under her belt, Karen now considers herself a work in progress and a student of reinventability. N'Dea Davenport

The soulful voice of vocalist/ songwriter/ producer N’Dea Davenport first emerged in 1991 when she became the front woman for the Acid Jazz British funk band, The Brand New Heavies.

But long before worldwide notoriety was present, she fell in love with music, dance, performing and the arts. “I think I got involved in almost everything creatively I could do when I was in school, to keep my mind busy to try and stay out of trouble. From sports to theater, you name it. I probably did it.” A regular routine of piano and dance studies were the core of her development. Ironic as it is, singing would later be the focus of her affections.

As soon as it was possible to “break out” as she calls it, she left her home town of Atlanta, with little more than 300 dollars on route to Los Angeles with the primary goal of just going somewhere she had never been to alone. Little did she know, that early sense of adventure would begin a chain-of-events that would change her life forever.

I moved house 15 times, changed job 8 times and lived in 5 countries all within 12 years. Each time I moved, I hoped to achieve something more fulfilling and a long lasting happiness.

My life was filled with short sharp highs and long, deep lows. I had no direction, no purpose and no footsteps to follow in. I was a victim of circumstance, lost in the world making the same mistakes over and over, falling in and out of life.

I would strive for success and recognition and take 2 steps forward, only to take another 3 steps back. It was like I was pinned to an elastic band that allowed me to only go so far, before the failure crept in and I would be pulled back again. The only thing that kept me focused was my dedication to finding the answers to questions I didn’t even know I was asking.

I just knew there had to be more, I knew I could be more, I knew life wasn’t supposed to be like this but I had no idea which direction to go in. All I knew was that one day I was going to turn a corner and it would be there. I didn’t know where that corner was, I didn’t know when I was going to turn it and above all I didn’t know what I would discover. All I knew was that I would ‘know’ when I got there.  My search took the best part of 20 years before it finally became clear.

What I found was Me.

My transformation was so remarkable that I decided to give up corporate life to start a new career in the personal growth & self empowerment arena and teach what I learned to others, so they too can find their true authentic self and can live with Passion, Propserity and Purpose.

I believe that we are all brilliant, we just have to start believing in ourselves and ask the right questions. Once we get onto the right pathway, we can achieve anything and everything, the world literally is our oyster.

Papa Carl Anderson

Papa Carl is a former teacher, football coach, and more recently Licensed Clinical Alcohol and Drug Counselor. He spent most of his professional career working with adolescents and young adults. Following his serious health crisis, he promised himself that if he somehow survivied he would get back to playing guitar and being actively involved in music.

What resulted was quite unexpected. Adrian recently returned to the Bay Area after a few years of living in the Sierra Foothills growing organic vegetables and herbs and reconnecting with nature. While attending his first yoga class he discovered the power of breath and movement which has influenced him ever since. Native American culture and natural ways have always influenced him. Growing up with a grandmother who was a healer from Mexico he was always drawn to natural remedies and began to explore his own healing abilities several years ago when faced with several life threatening illnesses. Dr. Louann Brizendine

Louann Brizendine, MD, a diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and the National Board of Medical Examiners, is an endowed clinical professor of psychiatry at the University of California, San Francisco.  She is founder and director of the Women’s Mood and Hormone Clinic.

After receiving her degree in neurobiology at University of California, Berkeley, and her medical degree from Yale University School of Medicine, she completed an internship and residency in psychiatry at Harvard Medical School.  She has served as faculty at both Harvard and UCSF.

Hoy Kersh

Hoy Kersh, author of Suitcase Full of Dreams, is a songwriter and Reggae music performer who lives part-time in Jamaica where she had an organic farm and taught reading and writing to adults at the local night school. Now living in the woods of Northern California, Kersh works with students at a rural Pacific Northwest school on a video documentary about logging and the regional water crisis, issues close to her heart. A lifelong antiwar activist and environmentalist, Kersh is active in local and regional peace movements. Kelvin Cooper

Kelvin grew up in the Bahamas, and started dancing in school, church and community performances.  He then moved to New York City and received dance degrees from Rowan University and New York University.  He is now full time faculty at Santa Rosa Junior College in Northern California where he teaches his unique brand of jazz, hip hop, and modern dance.  He also spearheads a dance outreach class which brings the spirit of dance to the community through performances at schools and community centers in the area.

John Crowley

John was born and raised in Dublin, Ireland. After receiving a degree in Computer Science, he spent the next 8 years working in Frankfurt, Germany where he met his wife, Anne-laure a native of Lyon, France. In 1993, they immigrated to Petaluma, California where John worked as a software engineer. He now owns his own company that provides air transportation logistics and management systems for cruise lines and wholesale tour operators.

His community minded undertakings include the Aqus Café Foundry Wharf, a vibrant community watering hole that provides the much-needed “third space” that is so often lacking in today’s world. John, always the connector, has helped create the many conversation groups that happen at the café. He sees the café not unlike the Public House where he grew up in the outskirts of Dublin, a place that was the real center of the community, a multi-generational space where people connect with each other to discuss important issues and to have fun.

He has created the wildly successful Aqus Crawl, another exciting way to connect with others in the community. The Crawl is a progressive party that goes from location to location visiting galleries, showrooms, pubs and restaurants. Each night has a theme designed to easily get people into conversation. For example, one theme might be “Bring a book that changed your life and give it away” and another one might be “Bring a photograph of yourself as a teenager”, essentially anything that will start a conversation.

John has also created Aqus News, a weekly e-newsletter, which is like a combination of a local “craigslist” and an online magazine. Again, this is designed to bring people together in a trusted virtual community.

In every way, for years, John’s efforts have been directed towards supporting the community he loves, creating new and innovative ways of bringing people together and encouraging community involvement.

John’s focus on “Social Capital” has over these past years brought Petaluma significant positive achievements.  His theory that as individuals of a town are provided more opportunities to interact and connect, the entire town benefits, has proven remarkably successful.

Maria de Barros

Maria de Barros’ music transcends taste, preference and even language.
